The movie also had a great soundtrack of music during the era, from EuroBloc Pop to rock. The Soulmen's I Wish I Were is insanely catchy, and Blue Effect's Slunecni Hrob is a great song, poignant considering the film leads right up to the Soviet invasion.
The stand-alone instrumental of the last track, Slunecny Hrob (Sunny Grave) is here, from the album Kingdom of Life:
I hope someday I can do something as awesomely cool as this. ABe is a genius, and this collection of artworks produced for the Serial Experiments: Lain series shows his skill. ABe is able to a draw a wide range of striking expressions, the backgrounds are detailed and evocative, and the coloring is wonderful and emotional as well.
Lain is one of the most brilliant and innovative series out there, creating a very sympathetic and memorable character in Lain. The series also dealt with reality and existence, capturing the surreal and the uncanny in the spirit of David Lynch. The art manages to create a certain feeling of dread and uncanniness too, with Lain among the empty urban landscapes. The book contains a mini-comic that ABe did featuring Lain, a delightfully creepy, weird and twisted tale that messes with the nature of reality and memory. I really think this artbook is one anyone has to own.
The Leningrad Cowboys are an awesome bad who has done some amazing covers - their take on Knockin' on Heaven's Door is the best I've heard.
(Also, Google has apparently snuck in a music search feature of sorts.)
A long while ago a defunct Resident Evil fansite had some scans of an RE comic in French. It was absurd enough that I kept two of them, not knowing what they actually said. Later I posted them on the MMCafe.net Imageboard, and found out it was from a RE doujinshi from a company called Shineisha , and someone posted the English translation of the parody:
And the intial French comics...
One of my favorite albums ever, it's very close to being the perfect album. I do, however, prefer the fast version of "Major Label Debut."
I used to be really into movie scores, and one of the things that always annoyed me was if a particular score was partially released, or even not at all. I'd end up scouring eBay for them, and managing to find some stuff.
Thanks to things like Soulseek, I've been able to find rare stuff like this. I was always trying to get ahold of the instrumental themes used in The Thin Red Line based off of one of the Melanesian religious chants featured in the movie, but it was never released. I finally managed to find them:
The first song is the theme that plays during the sequence at the idyllic village, really beautiful.
The second is during Witt (Jim Caviezel) and Welsh's (Sean Penn) conversation, and includes some of the ambient nature sounds.
The third is played near the end when Witt makes his sacrifice, and we get that swimming montage.
